22nd March was Earth Day. The Earth Day Network is a global leader in promoting environmental education and green schools. It is a timely reminder for us all that there are changes we can make in all areas of day to day life to play our part in energy conservation, both for the benefit of “Planet Earth” as well as helping your own or a companies bank balance by reducing heating bills. So your swimming pool is a great place to start.
A lot of modern swimming pools are using the latest and most advanced air source heat swimming pool heaters to get maximum return from the minimum input of energy when heating their pool. Deep End Pools have been supplying and installing swimming pool air source heat pumps for around 10 years.
The way a heat pump manages to be so efficient is through very economic heat transfer, the drawback of this is that it can take longer than a traditional boiler to heat the pool as it is transferring heat from the ambient air temperature around the unit. This is why when we install a an air source heat pump we have plenty of fresh air circulation to ensure the best possible air flow through the unit.
As the weather can be so variable from day to day with temperatures fluctuating as much as 20*c in a single month the units are sold with a few assumptions having being made by the manufacturer.
These assumptions are normally Average air temperature in a month, Assuming the swimming pool is covered when not in use and assuming that the circulation pump is on for a minimum number of hours per day.
These boundaries are normally easily met in a normal month however we sometimes get some really beautiful days in March and some really cold wet day days in May or June.
If you turn on your May – Sept heat pump in March because we are having glorious 22*c day time temperatures you have to consider that the average air temperature for this time of year is around 4*c / 5*c.
As many swimming pool owners who have had heat pumps for a few seasons will know the manufactures specification is normally fairly accurate over the swimming season.
2012 has been a very peculiar year though with a drought order coming in effect from mid April and almost everyday since we have had rain and cooler than average air temperatures and even threats of sleet and snow which obviously means that your not in an average May.
As soon as May gets to an average temperature of consistently around 15*c / 16*c (Day and Night) then the May to September heaters will be working as per manufacturers guidelines.

Your swimming pool heating is one of the main components to your swimming pool system. Without heating your swimming season is very limited or your have to be a hardened cool water swimmer.
Every swimming pool heating device has to be serviced on a regular basis – a minimum of once a year – to ensure a number of factors.
The reasons to service a heater:
The heater of any sort heating method is a transfer from either a condensing boiler through a heat exchanger, warm air for an air source heat pump or a direct fired swimming pool boiler – be it gas or oil.
Each type of heater over a period of time may become less efficient and highly used of delicate components may become worn or damaged. By servicing the heater on a regular basis you should maintain your swimming pool heaters efficiency and quality of heating the pools water to your required temperature.
Regular maintenance on your swimming pool heater is like carrying out a service on your car. You may not have any obvious faults and it may seem to be working well but by servicing the heater any small faults can be spotted as early as possible. By catching simple faults early this can also help prevent much larger costs of carrying out a full heater repair from a long term simple fault being left.
The obvious reason for swimming pool heater maintenance is safety. We have unfortunately been to many swimming pool plantrooms that have been badly damaged due to poor heater maintenance. Gas boilers especially require servicing regularly as these can quite easily fail to turn off and quite literally set themselves alight. Electric heaters that are not correctly maintained or if there are leaks close by can cause quite serve electric shocks. Air source heat pumps have moving components and if these are not correctly maintained then for the sake of tightening a simple screw you could require an entire new fan assembly which is a lot more expensive than a simple annual initial service.
