“Does Safety Turtle undermine supervision”?

May 26th, 2009

Here are some good talking points in response to this citing, made by both the Lifesaving Society of Ontario, and now the Pool Council of Canada.

“Rodney Taylor, Vice President of the Pool Council of Canada seems to think kids pulled out of pools wearing a Turtle aren’t really lives saved, because caregivers would have been watching otherwise. This reminds me of the opposition to car seat belts in the 50s – that people would drive less carefully wearing them. This is not and has never been the trend. Seat belts, like Safety Turtle, do not prevent accidents, they only mitigate their effect. Immersion accidents, like car accidents, are still serious and do damage. People use the Turtle like they use a seat belt. It’s really very simple!”

Bob Lyons, Terrapin

“At no point did you ever suggest eliminating parental supervision, but Mr. Taylor seems to believe that protection is some kind of zero sum exercise where adding one layer of protection detracts from another. People in Canada and people in the US are all still people and people tend to behave the same wherever they are. In the US, studies have shown that parental supervision alone can and does fail. We’re all aware of the statistic that 69% of all drowning incidents occur when one or both parents were responsible for supervision. Human beings are prone to error and lapses of judgment. It’s irresponsible to think that supervision alone is enough to prevent drowning and near drowning incidents. That’s like saying we don’t need seat belts, we should all just drive perfect all the time. On top of that, we know that in nearly 70% of drowning incidents children were not thought to be in the pool area. That makes his solution of always being in the water with your child a bit weak.

The idea of a “false sense of security” is always ridiculous. You don’t “rely on an alarm,” or a pool fence for that matter, and let your children run about unsupervised. Let’s use some common sense. Putting on my seatbelt and equipping an airbag does not embolden me with a sudden “false sense of security” so I suddenly drive like a maniac. Installing a security alarm at my house does not provide me with a “false sense of security” that prompts me to leave all my doors and windows open when I go out of town. Likewise, you don’t set your two year old in the backyard to play by herself while you go inside and do chores just because she’s wearing a Safety Turtle alarm. If anything, the sight of the Safety Turtle, the act of putting it on the child, is a constant reminder that water is a danger. It keeps safety present in your mind when it may have ordinarily slipped.

“Eric Lupton, Lifesaver Pool fence”

If organisations like RLSSA can make a comment that one reason that they do notlike the turtle is that they want to prevent the child getting to the waterin the first place, as falling into a pool can be traumatic, then it is abit odd that they still recommend parents should engage in CPR training. Ofcourse, every parent should know first-aid, IN CASE a child somehow getspast the supervising parent, but if supervision is as perfect as they wantit to be (in fairy-land!) then no parent should ever have to resuscitate achild. If they are prepared to allow for the fact that a child COULD getpast the watchful eye of a parent somehow and therefore CPR training isessential, surely we then have to make allowance for the fact that a Turtlethat warns the parent BEFORE CPR is required MUST BE a part of the drowningprevention process.

How much does a hot tub cost to run?

May 20th, 2009

How much does a hot tub cost to run?

Well this is a question often asked by many new potential hot tub to be owners, the costs will vary dependent upon many variables such as:

Water volume

Density of the foam cover and hot tub insulation

Usage

Tub location indoor and outdoor

Hot tub internal component make up i.e. 24hr circ or low speed boost pump filtration

There are of course many more I am sure.

We have in the past produced an estimated figure for hot tub running costs for our Branded Marquis spas, based upon an average usage, then of course in recent month’s energy prices in general have rocketed! So price projection for running costs for hot tubs has become very hard to pinpoint.

How could we pin point costs?

well Deep End Pools were on a routine shopping trip to Curry’s superstore in High Wycombe to purchase a display TV for our new swimming pool show site in the bishops centre Taplow Berkshire, when we stumbled upon the ‘Owl’ the owl is a device that attaches to your incoming electrical main, the device enables you to enter you per kw hr rate cost ours being 14p (shop around for energy costs we used to pay 28pence per kw hour!)

So our first test was hot tub on pump on low speed……….. Cost 6p per kW hour good start, then we switched the hot tub to high speed with the heater on…… 12p per kW hour. this was actually very good and we were certainly not surprised at the low running cost, however put this into the run time cost being an allowance for 4 hours per day filter cycling cost £0.24pence per day then we assumed an average heating time per day of around 4 hours at 12p per kw hour (this includes usage) this totals add together to cost £0.72 pence per day therefore the weekly cost being in the region of £5 this actually rings true with our energy bill also

The Marquis Promise spa really is an exceptional spa, the Marquis Spa brand is extremely well insulated with full foam insulation, not partial foam or foam backed shell this is a fully foamed cavity section throughout. The promise is a single pump spa and can seat seven, and the density of the covers is one of the highest grades. Our installation comprises of the Marquis promise spa being in an outdoor courtyard location partially dropped by 50% into decking with a pergola covering the position I would deem to be sheltered.

how much will you spa cost to run, well why not perform a similar test to us, Owl’s cost around £35 from local stores, we certainly do not suggest all spas cost in the region of £5’s per week as we have heard of some spas costing far more to run! These units usually are poorly insulated, poor low grade covers, ill selected pumps.

on the basis of a hugely positive test, we are going back to the Curry’s store High Wycombe Bucks and purchasing two more owls for our hot tub display centre after all the proof is in the pudding, we will be setting the units up on a Marquis Reward spa in Beaconsfield Buckinghamshire at our Mayflower way Hot tub store and on our newly launched Maidenhead store in the bishops centre Taplow where the Owl will attach to our Marquis Rendezvous spa, come in and chat to our trained hot tub advisers and view our owl display’s

Know your liner thickness!

May 20th, 2009

We have had a lot of confusion between different liners offered by different people.

We know that everybody likes to compare prices but make sure you are comparing like for like.

By this I mean compairing a product of equal pattern and thickness.

To clear up once and for all here is the difference between the 2 liners we use.

0.0005″ or 20 thou or 20 gauge or 0.5mm is normally the cheaper liner ans be aware that you can get your pool lined cheaper this way but over time it will not last as long.

0.00075″ or 30 thou or 30 gauge or 0.75mm is what we at Deep End Pools fit as standard. This is 50% thicker than a 20 thou liner and so in turn should be 50% stronger.

Be sure you know you are getting the very best liner for your pool!
